Fundamentals Workshop: How to get started in VR and AR – get a grasp on what’s needed

VR workshop

The opportunity awaits: extended reality (XR) technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have opened a new frontier for businesses.

These technologies continue to grow in popularity and demonstrate compelling use cases, so extended reality (XR) will experience significant growth in the coming decades. This creates new opportunities for businesses to distinguish themselves from the competition in a crowded market, and for people to embark on new careers by gaining a foothold in VR and/or AR.

But where do you start? What skills does your team need to create powerful XR experiences that win over customers and generate income?

Creating VR and AR experiences relies on a mix of skills drawn from different disciplines, but with the right toolset becomes much more accessible than you might imagine. To help businesses and professionals get a grasp on what’s needed, Fectar offers a VR & AR Fundamentals Workshop, which gives a thorough introduction to these technologies.

By attending this workshop, you can get a solid understanding of the core concepts, processes, devices, and applications, combined with industry best practices.

What is the workshop?

The VR & AR Fundamentals Workshop is a half-day, in-person event, with a small group size of up to 8 people. Held at the Fectar VR & AR Experience Center in Den Bosch, The Netherlands, this hands-on workshop is available in English and Dutch.

Topics you’ll cover in the VR & AR Fundamentals Workshop

The learning session is geared towards building a strong foundation in VR & AR by exploring the key technologies and the most compelling business ca

ses. There are 5 core modules, plus 2 optional deep-dive modules (based on the preferences of the group).

Starting with an introduction module that covers the current market and lan

dscape and primary use cases today, the workshop then looks at the ongoing development of XR technology and how VR and AR

contribute unique value to different industries.

Next, the workshop focuses on showcasing the most successful VR & AR projects. It closely examines key case studies, unpicking what makes them successful and translating these to best practices for designing, developing, and implementing your own projects in the future.

Then the group gets hands-on experience with the most common technologies used by the XR users themselves, including different headsets, gesture controls, and haptic devices.

Before the final core module, the group can take a deep dive into 2 optional modules: Virtual Meetups, and Holograms. These are two of the most compelling use cases for businesses, with considerable scope for customizing them to create added value. Looking closer at the Virtual Meetup topic, the group learns how businesses are using them to become more inclusive and sustainable, how these are organized, and how VR and AR differ for this use case. The group will also learn about the possibility of combining both VR & AR to enable the widest possible participation, and how this works in practice.

Holograms are something a lot of businesses have interest in, as these can be used in numerous use cases and experiences. The group can also zoom-in on this topic, exploring how holograms can be recorded and how they can be used for different experiences. This might include, for example, training programs and social media/marketing activities.

And the last ‘core module’ focuses on the future; looking at how to use the main takeaways to develop a plan, and what next steps are needed to develop skills or start creating VR & AR experiences.

Who benefits from this workshop?

There are no technical prerequisites for this workshop. It’s designed for anyone with a serious interest in using these technologies to generate business value. You will be expected to have some basic computer literacy, and the willingness to explore and learn.

By giving interested participants a thorough introduction to the world of VR and AR, Fectar is helping more industry professionals and businesses grasp the possibilities of XR technologies. This has strong advantages for anyone wanting to learn more about how VR and AR will transform their industry, and how they can get ahead of the curve – so they’re not left behind.

The goal is to develop a thorough understanding of the main technologies, devices, and best practices, along with an expert perspective on what’s needed to move forward and retain momentum in this developing field.

As you’ll discover, there are some amazing tools and apps available, making XR more accessible than ever to regular business users. During the workshop, you’ll be introduced to some of these, so you have a chance to start experimenting with your own VR and AR spaces afterwards.

Harnessing the growth in VR and AR

It’s smart to get familiar with the potential of this growing industry. Companies adopting XR technology are gaining a strategic position in the same way that companies who enthusiastically adopted the internet in the 1990s did.

Notably, businesses that were slow to ‘get online’ never recovered the lost momentum, or disappeared completely.

There are clear advantages for using VR and AR in several key sectors. It can massively lower the costs of training, and achieve higher customer engagement. By reaching new customers with these media, you can increase brand awareness and conversion rates.

But you need to know how to do this. Becoming a successful Metaverse Creator doesn’t happen overnight, or by chance. It comes from developing a heightened awareness and the right skills.
